MUJI Stakes Its Claim at ‘Central Pinklao’, Advancing Into Lifestyle Retail
Targets 80% Growth, Expanding Its Customer Base in Western Bangkok
Amid the continuously intensifying competition in the retail business and the lifestyle goods market, MUJI Retail (Thailand) Co., Ltd., the operator of MUJI retail stores in Thailand, continues to follow the brand’s approach centered on simplicity, practicality, quality, and everyday livability, while at the same time placing importance on developing its stores in line with consumer behavior in each area. Another major move is the renovation of MUJI’s Central Pinklao branch, which is not merely a refurbishment of the existing store but an expansion of the space of happiness by up to 3 times, totaling more than 1,000 square meters. The company views this expansion as reflecting the continuous growth of its customer base and the ongoing response from consumers in the area.
Mr. Ippei Ota, Managing Director, spoke about this significant move, saying, “We see the Pinklao area as a strategic location with strong potential in western Bangkok, as it connects the Thonburi side, inner Bangkok, and surrounding areas such as Taling Chan, Bang Kruai, and Nonthaburi. It is also surrounded by communities, educational institutions, hospitals, offices, and major commercial areas. Central Pinklao itself has long been a hub of daily life for people in this area, and following the shopping center’s renovation, it has played an even greater role in elevating the area and supporting its growth into a Lifestyle Hub, drawing an increasingly diverse customer base including students, working people, families, and medical personnel, whose lifestyles place importance on family, home, and everyday convenience, as well as choosing products that are practical, high quality, and offer long term value. With this change in location, combined with clearer consumer behavior, MUJI needed to develop the store to keep pace with both the growth of the shopping center and the needs of customers. This store expansion did not come from looking at space alone, but from incorporating behavioral data as well as customer feedback into the decision. A number of customers had previously noted that the existing store had limitations in space and in certain product categories, making shopping less convenient than it should be. We therefore took these opinions as the guideline for developing the new store, under the concept ‘From Your Voice…to a New Store, Bigger and More Complete’. The design still reflects the atmosphere unique to MUJI’s style, under the same standards as MUJI stores worldwide, so that customers can experience what can only be found at a MUJI store, through simple design, the choice of materials and color tones that evoke a natural feeling, as well as product displays that make it easier to picture everyday use. What is clearly different from the previous store is a more complete range of product categories and a layout that has been made easier to understand, with emphasis placed on product categories connected to the lifestyle of people in the area, such as household items, storage equipment, clothing, food, and everyday necessities. This store expansion also reflects the growth of the customer base and MUJI’s confidence in the long term potential of the Pinklao location.” This expansion also comes with clearer business goals and a more intensive marketing strategy toward the end of the year.
“Regarding our business direction for the remainder of 2026, MUJI continues to drive continuous growth, with the Pinklao branch targeting sales growth of approximately 80% compared to last year (2025), as a result of expanding our new customer base and increasing repeat purchases from existing customers. At the same time, MUJI continues to place importance on developing stores in each area, including expanding space, adjusting store formats, as well as selecting products and services suited to consumer behavior and creating new experiences for customers. Although consumer behavior is currently shifting more toward online purchasing, MUJI’s online sales still account for only about 5% of total sales. However, it cannot be denied that online is an important channel for increasing product accessibility and visibility for customers, especially in areas where there is not yet a MUJI store. At the same time, we continue to place importance on the offline, in store channel, because we believe the in store experience is key to building relationships and sustainability for the brand. We are not only aiming to sell products, but we want customers to experience the brand’s concept and philosophy through the atmosphere, product displays, and being able to picture how products are used in real life. We therefore see both the online and offline, in store channels as equally important, only with different roles,” said Mr. Ippei Ota.
Meanwhile, Mr. Akira Iijima, General Manager of Operations Sale and E-commerce, added further about the brand’s direction and future approach, saying, “MUJI does not position the brand around chasing trends or competing on price alone, but we are committed to offering products that are essential to everyday life, through simple design, practicality, quality, and long-lasting use. MUJI’s strength lies in the consistency between the product, the brand’s concept, and the in-store experience, from the appropriate selection of materials and design that removes what is unnecessary, to the arrangement of space that helps customers picture how to use the products and discover a way of living that suits themselves. Even as competition in the retail business trends higher, MUJI continues to maintain the brand’s identity, alongside developing products and services in line with the context and way of life of Thai consumers, because we want to be part of what helps make life more convenient and enjoyable, in keeping with the concept of Pleasant Life, through products designed simply and thoughtfully that can blend with each user’s way of life and reflect their individuality, so that everyday life becomes easier and more convenient, naturally leading to a better quality of life.”
After opening the Central Pinklao branch, MUJI continues to see opportunities to expand its market in Thailand, weighing a range of factors together, including population size, purchasing power, urban area expansion, travel convenience, as well as demand for products that meet everyday living needs. Next, MUJI is preparing to expand the space at its Central Westgate branch, to support population growth and consumer demand in the area. The redesigned store will be larger and is scheduled to open in October, following the same approach as the Central Pinklao branch, that is, developing the store to have more spacious areas, increasing product variety, and providing a more convenient shopping experience.”
As for plans to expand into other branches in the future, MUJI will use customer opinions and needs as important information in considering whether to expand or open additional branches. If customers would like MUJI to open a store in any particular area, they can send in their feedback, just as the feedback from customers in the Pinklao area was an important part of what led to the decision to expand the store’s space this time.
