MUJI Targets Bangkok’s Western Market with Central Westgate Revamp
Expanding Its New Customer Base and Aiming for 70–100% Growth
MUJI Retail (Thailand) Co., Ltd., operator of MUJI retail stores in Thailand, is moving ahead with an adjusted growth strategy centered on upgrading its existing stores, giving them more space and a broader product range to better meet consumer needs. The company has recently reopened the MUJI Central Westgate store in a new format following a renovation and expansion, to capture the potential of the Bang Yai area and western Bangkok, where communities and consumer bases are growing. The revamp not only adds space for shopping for products and services, but also reflects MUJI’s approach of developing store formats that suit customer behavior at each location, while creating growth opportunities through both new customers and repeat purchases from existing ones.
Mr. Ippei Ota, Managing Director, said the renovation and expansion of MUJI Central Westgate build on the business opportunity presented by Bang Yai, an area with continuously expanding urban development and residential communities.
“We see that consumer needs in the Bang Yai area are closely tied to family life, from organizing the home, cooking and relaxing, to adapting living spaces to support working from home or hybrid work. A home is no longer just a place to rest; it also has to serve an increasingly diverse range of lifestyles. We therefore see an opportunity to offer products that make everyday life more convenient, guided by a design philosophy that is simple, practical and useful over the long term. The existing customers MUJI wants to keep close are those who appreciate simplicity, quality and practicality in products. At the same time, the larger space and wider product variety at Central Westgate open the door to new customer groups, especially families, couples starting a family, and working people who want to set up their homes for both work and relaxation. The store will offer products across a wide range of categories.
For MUJI, the Central Westgate revamp is not simply about making the store bigger, but about improving the shopping experience. We place importance on designing the customer journey, from seeing products and finding what they need to discovering new products and ideas that can be applied to everyday life. We have adapted the space planning approach used in MUJI stores in Japan so that customers can understand the store layout more easily and naturally see how different products connect.”
Speaking on marketing strategy, the MUJI executive added: “We are focusing on communicating the strengths of the newly revamped store, with its larger space and wider product range, alongside a shopping experience that reflects MUJI’s approach in Japan. The aim is to encourage existing customers to return and give new customer groups more opportunities to get to know the brand, using online channels, collaboration with shopping centers and in-store activities to reach consumers, particularly families and working people in Bang Yai and the surrounding areas. After the revamp, we are prioritizing growth in both sales and customer numbers, while giving customers more opportunities to shop across a wider range of categories and keep coming back. We see the newly revamped Central Westgate store as another key driver for MUJI in late 2026, as the store is better equipped to serve customer needs. The company is targeting overall growth at the Westgate store of approximately 70–100%, with expanding the customer base and developing the store to meet consumer needs forming part of the approach to support this target,” said Mr. Ippei Ota.
Amid economic volatility and unpredictable weather, Mr. Akira Iijima, General Manager of Operations Sale and E-commerce, spoke about how MUJI is responding in order to reassure customers.
“In running the business, we focus on tracking customer buying behavior and planning products to match demand, including taking seasons and changing weather conditions into account. We bring experience from MUJI’s overseas network together with our understanding of the Thai market, where we still see opportunities in demand for products that make homes more livable and everyday life more comfortable. What matters is showing customers how MUJI products can fit their lifestyles, through both the in-store experience and communications that connect with the way Thai people live. As for our business direction in 2027, the company will continue to prioritize developing its existing stores, alongside improving the efficiency of its online sales channels. For now, however, we want to build a strong foundation, both in developing existing stores and in the online e-commerce channel. Once we are better prepared, we see the company returning to a period of store expansion, including considering opportunities in other provinces, taking into account the potential of each location and customer needs, so that products and in-store spaces suit the context of each community.
We see opportunities among families, people who are starting a family, and working people who want to improve their homes to better suit their lifestyles. At the same time, we need to maintain existing customers’ confidence through consistently good product quality and experiences. Our goal is to make MUJI accessible to more consumers and a part of Thai people’s everyday lives over the long term.” Mr. Akira Iijima said.
